     Originally, the area had been settled by native tribes before an initiative of President Andrew Jackson in 1836. The United States Government then opened this territory for intense settlement in 1889 that led to the time Tulsa was incorporated as a city in 1898. It had only 1000 residents and thrived on cattle trade. The situation changed when oil was discovered at Red Fork in 1901. Since then the city became known as the Oil Capital of the World, but it led to the pollution of the region and waters of Arkansas River.
